In the 2008 May 12 earthquake,Dujiangyan was devastated, along with many other towns and villages. Although they have done a lot of rebuilding, there are still countless piles of rubble that were once large buildings. Guangya School was hardly damaged at all, though many of its students lost family members.
I went to Guangya School at the end of June, 2009 to finish a sculpture in Philip Greening-Jackson's shop. The sculpture is now in the earthquake museum near Chengdu. On that visit I helped Philip upgrade his shop. I return annually to work with his students.
These three kids, Ruby, Joyce and Robin, are budding blacksmiths. Robin has been making an iron rose for a friend; Joyce and Ruby are just starting out and are learning to make leaves. Looking forward to seeing them again sometime in the Spring!
